Curing a Cold

Three days after returning from my birthday trip to Columbia, I came down with a severe cold. Nadia had been battling a similar bug the previous week and I am almost certain it was pasted onto me. Trying to beat it quickly, I exhausted all home regimens to alleviate the symptoms. From vitamin C packets to bone broth soup, nothing seemed to help open my sinuses.

Earlier in the week, Abby and I went to meet our new client, Freeze & Float Spa. To learn more about the company, we decided to give cryotherapy (the “Freeze” of Freeze & Float) a try. Fearful, I had Abby go first (little did I know, the Cryotherapy chamber is even colder directly following another person). After 3 minutes each, in a temperature of -90 to -120° Celsius, we both survived. Pre-cold, my body was aching. After the cryotherapy, those aches had subsided. The extreme cold of cryotherapy helps the body relieve pains and promotes muscle recovery. It also causes the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline and endorphins, which are known to improve your mood.

At the peak of my cold, I went back to Freeze & Float to test their other services, hoping for some relief. Attempting to sweat out the cold, I first tried the Infrared Sauna. The heat from the sauna uses infrared light to heat the body directly, gently increasing the body’s core temperature (penetrating 2-3 inches deep). Resulting in a more detoxifying sweat, the body naturally rids itself of toxins.

After the sauna, Nadia and I tested Float Therapy. Think of the float tank as a big bathtub. Filled with Epsom salt and body temperature water, you become weightless at the water’s surface. During the 60 minutes, you produce slower brainwave patterns, which are normally experienced only during deep meditation or before falling asleep. At this stage, your body and mind relax. In the gravity free environment, the body balances and heals internally– blood pressure and heart rate lowers. I could not get Nadia out; she loved it!

For those of you who have experienced this dreadful cold, you are familiar with the toll it can take on the body. The services offered at Freeze & Float helped relieve my body aches and pain, aiding my overall recovery.

Freeze & Float Spa is located in the River North neighborhood and open every day from 8am to 10pm.
