Humor At The Office

How often do you laugh at the office?

Last week we took a break to watch Ellen interview a couple of her celebrity guests. It was around 3pm which is a difficult hour to get through. As a team we often feel the effects of this midday crash and need extra motivation to stay focused.

We started laughing so hard and each one of us sat back at our desks feeling refreshed and more productive. This made me think of how to create a good environment for laughter at the office.

Mayo Clinic studies have shown that humor reduces stress. "When you start to laugh, it doesn't just lighten your load mentally, it actually induces physical changes in your body. It enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, increasing your brain's release of endorphins.”

The Harvard Medical School professor Carl Marci notes, “Laughter is a social signal among humans. It’s like a punctuation mark.” I think it shows acceptance and creates a healthy environment.

Laughter allows a boss to see the employees fun side and recognize that they have created an enjoyable and comfortable work space. When your team doesn't hold back you know you are seeing their genuine self.

I can also foresee how laughter can have a negative impact  but as long as the office stays within the bounds decency, proper time frame and common sense I believe in how it improves mood and the time spent together.

Fun Fact: It’s been suggested that children laugh around 300 times a day, and an average adult laughs only 4… wow!
